Fire breaks out at timber godowns in Kolkata, 17-18 families rendered homeless

Kolkata, Nov 16 (Reporter) A major fire broke out in a series of timber godowns at the congested Nimtala Ghat in the northern part of the city where 17 to 18 families were rendered homeless, official sources said on Saturday. There was no report of any casualty in the blaze, which was first noticed around 0330 hours at Maharshi Debendranath Road and 21 firefighting vehicles were pressed into service to douse the flames. Fire brigade sources said the fire erupted following an explosion of a suspected cylinder, aided by the winds from close to the Ganga in the eastern part of the water body. A number of residential houses were also affected by the fire rendering some 17 to 18 families homeless. Besides, the fire brigade, DMG and Civil Defence and local people were engaged in combating the fire, which still not brought under control in the destroyed wooden gowns, sources added. They said some 11 timber godowns have been gutted completely, and the shades collapsed in the fire. Bengal Fire Brigade Minister Sujit Bose, and state women and children Welfare Minister Shashi Panja visited the area.
