Fire destroys ice cream and hosiery factories in Bengal

Kolkata, July 12 (Reporter) A major fire destroys a hosiery and an ice cream factory on Mall Road near Nager Bazar in North 24 Parganas district of Bengal early on Friday. No casualty has been reported so far, official sources said. Sources said some 22 fire fighting vehicles were pressed into service to combat the fire, which was first noticed around 0230 hours, sources added. The fire first broke out at the ice factory and then spread over to the adjacent hosiery factory. The area is known as an industrial cluster or complex where medicine and groceries godowns were also reduced to ashes. When the report came the fire fighting personnel used hydraulic ladders and hose pipes to douse the flames. Sources said. The hosiery factory also has a godown where the finished and raw goods were stored. West Bengal Fire Brigade Minister Sujit Bose visited the site and said the entire shade made of tin collapsed. He said the JPC was being deployed to clear the shade to douse the sources of fire. He said the causes of fire were being probed and said the lawful action would be taken if the factory owners flouted the fire extinguisher system. Sources said some 300 to 350 labourers have been rendered jobless in the fire. It was not immediately ascertained whether the fire broke out in the mid night.
