Madurai, Jan 16 (Reporter) Four persons were gored to death and more than 350 others injured, few of them critically in multiple ‘Jallikattu’ (taming of bulls) events held at different parts of Tamil Nadu on Thursday as part of the ongoing Pongal festivities. Official sources said a 66-year-old spectator, identified as Kulandaivelu died of chest injury inflicted by a charging bull, while 46 others injured during the Jallikattu held at Rachandar Thirumalai village in Karur district. In another tragic incident, Manivel (43) was gored to death by a ferocious bull when he was walking on the road. The bull that was unleashed during ‘eruthaattam’ (another form of Jallikattu) held at Sentharapatti village near Attur in Salem district went berserk and ran on the road, goring him to death on the spot. In Pudukottai district, a bull attacked an unidentified septuagenarian, after it was let out during the Jallikattu event held at Mangadevanpatti village. The elderly man was returning home after witnessing the event, when the tragedy occurred. In Sivaganga district, a spectator identified as Subbaiah died of injuries, after a bull gored him during ‘Manjuvirattu’ (bull race) held at Siravayal village. Over 200 persons, including bull tamers and spectators were injured during the event. Three of them, who sustained critical injuries, were admitted to the government hospital at Karaikudi. Atleast 67 persons were injured, three of them seriously in the World-renowned Jallikattu held at Alanganallur in Madurai district. The seriously injured were admitted to Government Rajaji Hospital, where their condition was stated to be critical. As many as 989 bulls brought from various parts of the State and 450 bull tamers participated in the day-long event that concluded this evening. An agile youth, Abi Siddhar from Poovanthi village in Sivaganga who tamed 20 bulls in the event emerged as the best bull tamer and was awarded a luxury car on behalf of Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin. A bull, namely ‘Bahubaali’ was adjudged the best performing bull in the event and a tractor was presented to its owner Mohan from Salem on behalf of Chief Minister M.K.Stalin.
