Bengaluru, July 13 (Reporter) Emphasising the importance of discovering one's reason for living (ikigai), GITAM Deemed-to-be University celebrated the achievements of 1218 graduates at its 15th annual convocation ceremony at the Bengaluru campus on Saturday.
"At GITAM, we are dedicated to providing a 360-degree learning experience. Our mission is to create an environment where students can discover their ikigai, engage in groundbreaking research, and emerge as compassionate, skilled professionals ready to make a difference in the world," Gitam University President M Sribharat said in his address.
Ikigai is a Japanese concept that means "a reason for living." It is a multifaceted philosophy that encompasses the idea of finding purpose and satisfaction in life.
The ceremony was graced by distinguished guests, including Sudhanshu Mani, the visionary engineer behind the Vande Bharat Express; M Sribharat, and Prof. Dayananda Siddavattam, Vice-Chancellor of GITAM (Deemed to be) University.
Gold medals were awarded to outstanding students across various disciplines, including Technology, Science, and Management, recognizing their exceptional academic performance and contributions. The university also conferred honorary doctorates upon Leela Samson, renowned dancer and Padma Shri recipient, and Anand Malligavad, the "Lakeman of India" celebrated for his water conservation efforts.
Mani emphasised the necessity of moving beyond traditional education by noting that modern skills and cross-cultural competence are crucial for the future workforce. He stressed that educational institutions must focus on developing these abilities in students to ensure their success in an interconnected world.
The visionary engineer praised GITAM’s dedication to fostering innovation and entrepreneurship, highlighting the importance of not only acquiring knowledge but also applying it to address real-world challenges.
Prof Dayananda Siddavattam emphasised the university's commitment to being a leading knowledge-driven institution. He remarked that GITAM aims to be a beacon of knowledge and innovation, and through initiatives like the Multidisciplinary Unit of Research on Translational Initiatives (MURTI), the university promotes inter-disciplinary collaborations to tackle pressing global challenges.
Siddavattam noted that the achievements of the graduates reflect GITAM's dedication to excellence in education and research.
