Chennai, Jan 5 (Reporter) The Chennai City Police on Sunday evening slapped
Goondas Act against the Anna University alleged sexual assault accused
after investigations revealed that he was involved in several criminal cases.
The accused, Gnanasekaran (37), who was arrested on a complaint from the
victim, was detained under the Goondas Act on the recommendations of the
Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed by the Madras High Court.
Orders detaining the accused, a Biriyani Vendor at the foot path near the Anna
University campus, under the Goondas Act, under which he would not get bail
for at least one year, was served on him at Puzhal Central Prison where he was
lodged, police said.
The court formed the SIT comprising three Women IPS officers after taking
suo motu cognisance of the incident and while hearing two PILs filed by
advocates demanding a CBI probe into the incident.
The SIT, after taking over the probe, raided his residence and was said to
have seized several incriminating documents, including laptops, electronic'
gadgets, property documents and other materials.
As several TV channels and social media platforms highlighted about the
seizure in public domain, Tamil Nadu DGP Shankar Jiwal denied them as
baseless and false and said no competent authority, including the members
of the SIT had neither given any interview nor spoke to the media.
A release from the DGP office said the probe by the SIT, comprising three
women IPS officers, constituted by the Madras High Court was on and the
reports of 'Sir' and seizures being circulated in public domain by some
news channels and social media platforms were unsubstantiated.
It said either the SIT or any other competent authority had issued any statements
or spoken to the media on the issue.
It said as per the orders of the Madras High Court, an All Women Special Investigation
Team (SIT) headed by Dr Bhukya Sneha, Deputy Commissioner Of Police, Anna Nagar,
Chennai has been constituted to investigate the cases in connection with the incident.
The SIT is currently conducting investigation into the cases, it said.
In the meantime, some news channels and social media platforms have
telecast/published certain information in the public domain commenting
on the alleged leads/progress in the investigation by the SIT.
In particular, these unsubstantiated forums claim that “victim girl has given
statement before the SIT narrating about accused allegedly speaking to
one SIR”, that “SIT has allegedly seized electronic gadgets from accused
which is claimed to have contained obscene contents of the victim girl”,
that “one person from Tiruppur is allegedly also identified as accused in
the case”, etc, the release said.
"However, it is to clarify that SIT or any other competent authority has not
issued any statements or comments to any individual or media about the
progress of investigation of the cases", it clarified.
The information and contents being circulated in public domain about the
developments and progress of the investigation of the cases by SIT is
completely false and without any basis, the release said...////...
