Graft case: Bombay HC grants bail to police officer Sachin Waze

Mumbai Oct 22 (Reporter) The Bombay High Court on Tuesday granted bail to suspended police officer Sachin Waze in a corruption case also involving former Maharashtra home minister Anil Deshmukh. However, Waze will continue to remain in jail as he is in judicial custody in the 'Antilia' bomb scare case . Waze, presently in judicial custody, had sought to be released on bail claiming that he is an approver in the case. He had also sought the relief on grounds of parity citing the bail granted to the other accused in the case. Waze's counsel Aabad Ponda had said as his client is an approver, there is no chargesheet against him, and he is never going to get convicted or jailed, as he is a witness. "While the trial will go on for 20 years. Essentially, this is a challenge under Article 21 (Protection of life and liberty).” He also said that keeping Waze in jail even after he was declared as an approver was violation of his fundamental rights. The CBI had opposed the plea stating that Waze had not deposed in the case so far and it would not be in the best interest of the case to release him on bail. The bench disagreed with the CBI's submission and granted bail . Waze was declared an approver by the special CBI court in June 2022.
