HC refuses to ban film 'The Diary of West Bengal'

Kolkata, Aug 29 (Reporter) The Calcutta High Court on Thursday refused to stop the release of a motion picture titled "The Diary of West Bengal" and allowed its makers to go ahead with its public screening in cinemas, court sources said. A division bench headed by Chief Justice T S Sivagnanam refused to stay the film’s release on the ground that it depicted communal violence in the backdrop of the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation war. The bench, also comprising Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharya, told the petitioner, “if you want to watch the movie, watch it, if you don't then don't.” "We are in a democratic setup. Any healthy criticism is welcome. If those who are aggrieved come, then let them approach us. West Bengal is a tolerant society...Where are we headed, if you want we will admit it and keep it pending..." the judges told the court during the hearing. “The Diary of West Bengal” is a film based on true incidents directed by Sanoj Mishra and produced by Jitendra Narayan Singh Tyagi.
