Heavy inflow to N S Project, crest gates lifted to release water

Guntur, AP, Aug 5 (Reporter) After a long gap, the radium crest gates of Nagarjuna Sagar project were lifted to discharge flood water downstream on Monday. The Nagarju Sagar project is receiving heavy inflow as the crest gates of the Srisailam project were lifted. In Monday morning, Superintendent Engineer Nageswara Rao and Chief Engineer Anil Kumar performed Jala Harthi to the water at the reservoir traditionally before lifting the crest gates to discharge flood water. Since this morning, the engineers have lifted 12 crest gates to a height of five feet to release excess water downstream from the Pulichintala project. An indication was given by a blowing siren to alert people downstream before releasing water from the NSP. The engineers said that the NS project is receiving 2,74,000 cusecs of water from upstream and 1,13,889 cusecs of water are being released downstream. The total capacity of the Nagrjuna Sagar project is 590 feet, and the water level stands at 583.60 feet now. As against the total storage capacity of 312.5 tmc of the project, 293.39 tmc of water has been impounded now. Some more crest gates of the NSP are likely to be lifted as the heavy inflow is continuing, engineers indicated. A large number of tourists were seen thronging the Nagarjuna Sagar project to witness the panoramic view of water gushing out of the crest gates. Meanwhile, 10 crest gates of the Srisailam project were lifted to a height of a height of 12 feet to discharge 3,10,840 cusecs of water downstream. The Srisailam project is receiving 3.46 lakh cusecs of water from the upstream Jurala and Sunkesula projects. The Srisailam water level has reached its brim as the water level stood at 883 feet now and 204.7 tmc of water is impounded at the project as against the full capacity of 215.80 tmc. The hydropower generation has started at the left and right canals of the project by releasing 63,836 cusecs of water.
