Hyderabad, Mar 1 (Reporter) The International Institute of Information Technology Hyderabad (IIITH) proudly announced a grant funding of USD 186,000 from Qualcomm Technologies Inc.
The grant is earmarked for utilisation over the next three years, focusing on research in the field of Edge AI, AI Model Development, and the establishment of an advanced Edge AI Research lab by IIITH.
The lab's primary objective will be to develop Edge AI use cases on Qualcomm platforms, leveraging the Qualcomm® Innovators Development Kit (QIDK), accompanied by technical support and mentorship provided by Qualcomm.
The inauguration of the Qualcomm Edge AI Research lab took place at the IIITH campus on Friday, with Leendert van Doorn, Senior Vice President of Qualcomm, officiating the ceremony.
In his address, he expressed Qualcomm's commitment to fostering AI innovation in India and worldwide. He stated, "Today’s announcement marks the beginning of a three-year journey of collaboration, research, and innovation for advancing Edge AI technologies. Qualcomm remains committed to providing the most promising innovators with the technologies and the expertise to shape not just India’s future but for the world."
Professor Ramesh Loganathan will lead the research team at IIITH, benefitting from Qualcomm's QIDK and comprehensive technical and knowledge support.
IIITH's Director, Prof P J Narayanan, emphasized the significance of AI on the edge as the next frontier, expressing happiness about Qualcomm's establishment of the Edge AI lab at IIITH. He said, "As AI gets more pervasive, AI on the edge will be the next frontier. We are very happy that Qualcomm has set up an Edge AI lab at IIITH that will now amplify the research efforts already underway."
The Edge AI lab will explore potential collaboration areas such as computer vision, graphics, edge computing, VLSI and Embedded Systems, and 5G and platform machine learning.
Prof C V Jawahar, Dean R&D, IIITH, highlighted the long-standing association between IIITH and Qualcomm, expressing confidence that the new lab will further enhance IIITH's strengths in Edge AI.
Shashi Reddy, Vice President of Engineering at Qualcomm India Private Limited, shared his enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, "Our collaboration with IIITH will usher in an era where innovation flourishes.
