Margao, Feb 22 (Reporter) FC Goa head coach Manolo Marquez expressed his discontent after his side lost to NorthEast United FC by a 2-0 scoreline in the Indian Super League (ISL) match at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here in Goa on Wednesday night. This marks the second consecutive loss for the Gaurs, dropping points against Mohun Bagan SG and NorthEast United FC in consecutive home games after an unbeaten run in their opening 12 matches. Tomi Juric's well-directed penalty and FC Goa defender Odei Onaindia’s own goal secured victory for the Highlanders, propelling them to the sixth spot with 19 points in 16 matches. Notably, Australian forward Juric has found the net five times in his last three appearances. Marquez expressed his dissatisfaction with the result, believing that they failed to play according to their style. However, he offered words of praise for his opponents and felt that the Highlanders truly deserved all three points in every aspect of the game. “I'm very angry, disappointed with myself, with the players, with everyone,” Marquez said in the post-match press conference. “I think that we played a bad game. I feel that today, NorthEast United FC knew better about what they had to do on the pitch. This is my feeling. As a team, they (NorthEast United FC) were better even though they scored with one penalty and one corner,” he added. The Spaniard acknowledged that creating mere goalscoring opportunities would not be sufficient to secure all three points. He believes that players need to take responsibility, especially when encountering different phases throughout the season. “We created some chances. But I don't explain it as very good because the players were not (at their best today),” he stated. “They don't know exactly what is happening. And finally, it's very difficult to play a regular season. It's very difficult to keep having good moments and be unbeaten. In some moments of football, if you have played before, you know that these kinds of situations can happen,” he added further. It’s the first time a team coached by Marquez has lost consecutive home games in the ISL. The path ahead looks challenging as the Gaurs are set to take on Kerala Blasters FC and Mumbai City FC in their next two away fixtures. Despite the tough schedule, Marquez maintains optimism about their performance in the upcoming matches. He emphasizes the need for an immediate and proactive response from his players to shift the momentum back in their favour. “Let's see. I told you before that you can check the good teams after one defeat,” he commented. "Now, after two defeats, I repeat, this is the regular season. The team will finish in the position that it deserves. If we are champions, we will deserve to be champions.
