New Delhi, Feb 1 (Reporter) India made a dominant start in their Davis Cup 2025 World Group I playoffs against Togo, with Mukund Sasikumar and Ramkumar Ramanathan securing comfortable victories in their respective singles rubbers at the DLTA Complex here on Saturday.
Mukund Sasikumar dispatched Liova Ajavon 6-2, 6-1, while Ramkumar Ramanathan breezed past Thomas Setodji 6-0, 6-2, handing India a commanding 2-0 lead ahead of the second day of the five-match tie on Sunday.
Opening the proceedings, Mukund, ranked 365th in the ATP rankings, overcame a nervy start against Ajavon. He saved a break point in the third game before gaining momentum to break his opponent in the next. He then extended his lead to 4-1 and secured another break in the eighth game to clinch the first set.
Mukund carried his dominance into the second set, racing to a 4-0 lead as Ajavon struggled to hold serve. Though the Togolese player managed to break back in the fifth game, Mukund quickly regained control and closed out the match in one hour and 15 minutes.
The second singles rubber proved even more one-sided, as Ramkumar Ramanathan, ranked 406th in the world, blanked Setodji in the first set. The Indian then broke the 1256th-ranked Togolese player in the first and fifth games of the second set to complete a swift 50-minute victory.
India now needs just one more win to secure the tie. On Sunday, N Sriram Balaji and Rithvik Bollipalli will take on Thomas Setodji and Padio Isak in the doubles rubber. Mukund Sasikumar is scheduled to face Thomas Setodji, while Ramkumar Ramanathan will meet Liova Ajavon in the reverse singles...////...
