Bengaluru, Dec 29 (Reporter) The Padukone-Dravid Centre for Sports Excellence is all set to host two international women’s football friendlies between India and Maldives. The matches are scheduled for Monday and Thursday, and kickoff at 3:30 PM IST. Fans in India can catch the action live via streaming platforms. India, currently ranked 69th in the FIFA women’s football rankings, will face Maldives, who are placed 163rd. These friendlies offer both teams an opportunity to regroup and rebuild after disappointing performances in the SAFF Championship 2024. In the recently concluded SAFF Championship, India’s campaign ended in heartbreak as they lost to Nepal in the semifinals on penalties, following a group-stage defeat to Bangladesh (3-1). Maldives, on the other hand, had a forgettable tournament, exiting in the group stage after suffering heavy defeats, including a 13-0 loss to Bhutan and an 11-0 drubbing by Nepal. The two sides did not meet during the competition. The last encounter between India and Maldives took place in 2021, with India emerging victorious with a 3-1 scoreline. India’s head coach, Swedish tactician Joakim Alexandersson, has named a 23-member squad for the friendlies, blending youth and experience. Key players like Sangita Basfore, Grace Dangmei, and Pyari Xaxa will be crucial in the upcoming games. Notably, captain Ashalata Devi has been excluded from the squad, signalling opportunities for younger players to step up. With these friendlies, Team India aims to gain valuable match practice and test emerging talents, keeping an eye on future competitions...////...
