Indian Army kept on standby in wake of India-Bangladesh

Shillong, Aug 6 (Reporter) The Indian Army has been kept on a standby in the wake of political violence in Bangladesh which forced Sheikh Hasina, the Awami League Supremo, to resign as Prime Minister and flee to India. “Two companies of the 21 Mountain Division have been kept on a standby at Nongtalang area (in West Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya) to deal with any kind of situation,” an army official told UNI on condition of anonymity. “The BSF is still on the first line of defence and if the situation warrants then our men will move forward. We are not taking any chances with the prevailing situation,” the army official said. Meghalaya shares a 444 km stretch of the India-Bangladesh border, part of which is porous, hilly and unfenced and prone to frequent infiltrations. Inspector General of Border Security, Meghalaya Frontier, Harbax Singh Dhillon said the BSF troopers are on the “highest alert” along the international border. “The situation at the border is under control, however, there has been some violence just across the border in Bangladesh. A clear cut instructions have been given to BSF troopers to secure the border and to prevent any infiltration bid,” Dhillon told UNI. “Our citizens should rest assured that enough forces have been deployed thickly to secure the border. We are coordinating with the Meghalaya police and the civil administration,” the IG BSF added. Dhillon said the Indian army is deployed at “certain pockets” and is working independently. On Monday, the Meghalaya government had clamped night curfew along the India-Bangladesh border from 6 pm to 6 am daily within 200 metres inside Indian Territory till the situation improves in Bangladesh...////...
