Chennai, Mar 8 (Reporter) Chennaiyin FC will host Jamshedpur FC at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here in the Indian Super League (ISL) match on Sunday at 7:30 PM IST.
This is the last league stage match for both teams this season.
The Red Miners have qualified for the playoffs and are placed fourth in the table with 38 points from 23 games. The Marina Machans are positioned 11th with 24 points from 23 encounters.
Chennaiyin FC had won the reserve fixture by 5-1, their goal-scoring struggles are concerning, having failed to find the back of the net in their last two ISL matches.
Jamshedpur FC are one win away from levelling their best-ever season tally of 13 victories, but
have won just once in their last five outings.
Chennaiyin FC have been triumphant in just two of their 11 home games this season (D4 L5), their second-worst such record in ISL after 2018-19 (one win).
The Marina Machans have not scored in 10 matches this season, their joint-highest in a single ISL campaign (2020-21). Wilmar Jordan Gil has been effective with 10 strikes, but the next best after
him has been Daniel Chima Chukwu with four goals.
Jamshedpur FC have banked on their international trio of Javi Hernandez (7), Jordan Murray (6), and Javi Siverio (6) for goals, with the three of them netting 19 out of their 35 strikes thus far. Hernandez is suspended for this match though.
Jamshedpur FC have also been adept at breaking opposition’s offences, since Muhammad Uvais (33), Nikhil Barla (24), Sourav Das (24) lead the tackling charts for them.
In 15 fixtures between these two teams, Chennaiyin FC have won seven games and Jamshedpur FC have been triumphant thrice.
Chennaiyin FC head coach Owen Coyle maintained that there’s a significant lot to play for in this match for his team.
“We are playing against a very good opponent. So there’s a lot to play for, both individually and also at a collective level,” he said.
Jamshedpur FC head coach Khalid Jamil insisted that his side is placing adequate importance on the coming encounter.
“We need to prepare like we have been doing so far in the last game and look to win the match,” he said.
Jamshedpur FC’s Albino Gomes has made 88 saves, stopped four penalties, rounded off 171 recoveries, alongside punching nine times in 23 games this season.
Chennaiyin FC’s Irfan Yadwad has made four assists in 2024-25 and is one away from equalling
the club record for most assists in a single season by an Indian player (Anirudh Thapa and Aakash Sangwan - 5).
