Hyderabad, June 22 (Reporter) Union Coal and Mines Minister G Kishan Reddy has stated that the Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) was significantly damaged by the previous BRS government.
Speaking to the media at the BJP state headquarters in Nampally on Saturday, Reddy emphasised that Singareni is not only a crucial asset for Telangana but also one of the top government institutions in the country. He accused the then-BRS government of economically and morally damaging Singareni through flawed decisions.
Reddy alleged that the political interference by KCR's family led Singareni to bankruptcy, and flawed policies crippled the company.
He highlighted that when Telangana was formed on April 1, 2014, Singareni had deposits of Rs 3500 crore. Before 2014, Singareni attracted high-interest payers to deposit excess cash balances and paid salaries on time.
Due to the KCR government's chaotic management and overbearing meddling, Singareni is now deeply indebted, which has exacerbated its financial predicament and led to hardship for its labour force.
As of March 31, TSGENCO owed Singareni Rs 8056 crore since the KCR government had not paid. In addition, there are arrears of almost Rs 30,000 crore related to energy and coal.
Reddy criticised the KCR government for not paying power subsidies to Transco and Genco, which would have improved the situation of power companies and allowed Singareni to pay bills on time. He mentioned that the workers in Singareni have faced difficulties paying their bills due to inappropriate policies.
Reddy recalled a time when, without political interference, the central government coordinated with labour unions and ran the organization efficiently, making it self-sufficient and financially stable.
However, after the KCR government came to power, political interference from legislators and ministers, starting from the BRS sarpanch, disrupted Singareni's operations. He claimed that BRS MLAs were issued a circular to follow the protocol in the Singareni organisation, leading to officials having to seek approval from KCR's family members and ministers.
Despite multiple attempts by the workers to meet with the Chief Minister to address their issues, Reddy noted that KCR never paid attention. He pointed out that while the state government holds a 51 per cent share in Singareni, the central government holds 49 per cent.
Reddy accused KCR's family of using Singareni for political gains without considering the welfare of the families dependent on the company. He asserted that the former Chief Minister saw Singareni as a tool for winning votes rather than focusing on the organisation's development.
Reddy promised to work for the welfare of Singareni workers and to increase coal production in the country. He assured that the Narendra Modi government would take all necessary measures for the workers' welfare and dismissed rumors about the privatisation of Singareni as false propaganda.
Reddy emphasised the importance of coal for power generation, stating that 85 per cent of coal is used for this purpose. He accused the then KCR government, along with BRS MLAs and ministers, of looting Singareni and damaging its economy.
He demanded a thorough investigation into the alleged looting and bill manipulation in Singareni during the previous BRS government. He stated that the central government would write a letter to the state government seeking an inquiry into the matter.
Reddy mentioned that the central government is conducting coal mine auctions transparently and corruption-free, with 107 coal mines auctioned in nine rounds so far, generating about Rs 37,000 crores in revenue for state governments.
He noted that state governments receive 14 per cent of the revenue from these auctions, with the central government not taking a single rupee.
Reddy assured that as someone familiar with the hardships faced by Singareni workers, he would stand by them and work to save Singareni. He reiterated his commitment to increasing coal production and employment opportunities in the country...////...
