Ankola, July 21 (Reporter) In the wake of a devastating landslide in Shirur, Ankola taluk of Uttara Kannada district, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Sunday conducted a site visit to assess the ongoing rescue operations.
The calamity, which resulted in multiple fatalities, has posed significant challenges for rescue teams. "Today, I visited the site where many lives were tragically lost due to the hill collapse," said CM Siddaramaiah.
"The rescue efforts are being conducted under extremely hazardous conditions, with a dangerous hill covered in mud on one side of the road and the flowing Kali river on the other," he added.
The continuous torrential rains have further complicated the search for survivors trapped under the debris. Despite these challenges, the Chief Minister praised the efforts of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel. "Their performance in such dangerous conditions is truly commendable," he added.
Currently, four teams equipped with radar technology are scouring the landslide area to locate any trapped individuals, while an additional four teams are operating within the river. Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda has been overseeing the operations at the site for several days.
Highlighting the precarious nature of the rescue mission, CM Siddaramaiah warned the personnel to exercise utmost caution due to the potential for further land collapses and unstable road conditions. "The site resembles an island with the Kali river flowing around it and a half-collapsed hill standing in between," he noted.
To mitigate risks, the Chief Minister has suggested consulting high-level experts to understand the challenges and acquire necessary technological assistance.
Accompanying CM Siddaramaiah during the visit were Revenue Minister Krishnabaire Gowda, District In-charge Minister Mankala Vaidya, former Minister RV Deshpande, MLA Satish Sail, and senior officials including Additional Chief Secretaries LK Atiq and Shalini Rajneesh.
