Bengaluru, May 30 (Reporter) Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar announced that Scheduled Tribes Welfare Minister B Nagendra will be summoned to provide an explanation following allegations of his involvement in an illegal money transfer case and the subsequent death of an official.
Addressing the media here on Thursday, Shivakumar stated, "Demanding resignations is the role of the opposition. We will examine the matter. I have reviewed the FIR, and the Chief Minister is taking it very seriously. We will summon Minister Nagendra to uncover the truth."
Shivakumar emphasised that mere allegations without evidence are not enough to prompt immediate action. "If anyone has done wrong, it is indeed wrong. We have requested a full report from the officials, and suspensions have already been enforced. However, suspensions alone are not enough. The Chief Minister is taking this matter very seriously and assures uncompromising action against all involved, whether they are bank officials or others," he added.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is reportedly taking the case very seriously and has requested a detailed report from officials. This development follows the unauthorized transfer of Rs 88.62 crore from the Karnataka Maharshi Valmiki Scheduled Tribes Development Corporation’s bank account, which came to light after accounts superintendent P Chandrashekhar committed suicide on Sunday, leaving behind a death note.
The deceased named the corporation’s Managing Director JG Padmanabh, accounts officer Parashuram G Durugannavar, and Union Bank of India Chief Manager Suchismita Rawal in his note, also alleging that Minister Nagendra had issued oral orders for the fund transfers.
The opposition BJP is demanding Nagendra’s resignation and a CBI probe into the matter. Meanwhile, Home Minister DR G Parameshwara visited the deceased officer’s family to offer condolences.
Two FIRs have been filed following Chandrashekhar’s death—one against the three individuals named in his death note and another against six bank officials for alleged fraud. The state government has suspended the Managing Director and an official of the Corporation mentioned in the death note.
Responding to comparisons with a previous case involving BJP Minister KS Eshwarappa, where Congress had demanded resignation after a contractor’s suicide, Shivakumar noted that there is no direct reference to Minister Nagendra in this case. "We are examining it; there is no question of protecting anyone. It is a matter of crores of rupees," he said.
Meanwhile, the Union Bank of India has taken decisive action after discovering irregularities in the accounts of the Karnataka Maharshi Valmiki Scheduled Tribes Development Corporation Limited at its MG Road Branch in Bengaluru. The bank, in a statement, promptly declared the transactions as fraudulent and has since filed a formal complaint with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to ensure a thorough investigation and swift identification of the culprits. The complaint was officially lodged on Thursday, May 30, 2024.
In response to the incident, Union Bank has suspended three officials from the branch pending further inquiry. The bank emphasized its commitment to upholding the highest standards of integrity and transparency and assured full cooperation with the authorities to achieve a just and expedited resolution.
"Our dedication to our customers and stakeholders remains our top priority, and we are taking all necessary steps to prevent such incidents," a bank spokesperson stated. Union Bank of India reassures the public that all possible measures are being taken to address the situation and prevent future occurrences of similar incidents.
Shivakumar also dismissed rumors about his replacement as KPCC chief, stating, "No talks of president post or anything for now. With local body polls around, the party cannot afford to change leadership."
Regarding the upcoming MLC polls, Shivakumar hinted that Siddaramaiah’s son, Yathindra Siddaramaiah, might be a candidate. The Congress leadership is set to decide on candidates for the biennial election to 11 seats of the Karnataka Legislative Council on June 13. Based on the Assembly’s current strength, Congress can win seven seats, BJP three, and JDS one.
Shivakumar said the candidates for the MLC polls will be decided by the high command, acknowledging the high number of ticket seekers and the commitment towards Yathindra for vacating the Varuna assembly seat for his father...////...
