Karnataka HC dismisses defamation suit after ex-judge Saldanha apologises

Bengaluru, July 8 (Reporter) The Karnataka High Court on Monday dismissed a criminal defamation case against former judge Justice MF Saldanha after he offered an unconditional apology. The case originated from a complaint filed by Advocate MP Noronha of Bengaluru, following a press conference where Justice Saldanha addressed issues related to Baptist D'Souza's case, involving allegations of police inaction and property damage. In response to the complaint, Justice Saldanha offered an unconditional apology and pledged not to escalate the matter further. Consequently, Justice NS Sanjay Gowda of the High Court quashed the case against him. A similar apology from co-accused PB D'sa also resulted in the dismissal of charges against him. However, charges continue against two others involved, who did not submit apologies. The decision came after arguments in court questioning the legality and intent behind the defamation charges, emphasising that the press conference aimed to highlight police irregularities rather than defame Noronha.
