Karnataka milk prices to hit Rs 44/l after Rs 2 hike, sparking criticism

Bengaluru, June 25 (Reporter) Following recent increases in fuel prices by the Karnataka government, the Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) on Tuesday announced a Rs 2 per litre hike in the price of milk. KMF Chairman Bhima Naik revealed the decision at a press conference here prompting swift criticism from opposition leaders. Effective June 26, the price of a litre of Nandini milk in Karnataka will rise to Rs 44. This marks the second price hike in less than a year, with the previous increase occurring in July 2023, when prices were raised by Rs 3 per litre. Defending the hike, Naik explained that part of the increase was to cover the cost of providing 1,050 ml in a litre sachet, underscoring that despite the adjustment, Karnataka's milk prices remain lower compared to neighboring states. Notably, prices for curd and other milk products sold by KMF will remain unchanged. The announcement has sparked criticism from various quarters, with opposition leaders like R Ashoka of the BJP condemning the move. He accused the state government of burdening citizens already grappling with rising fuel costs and inflationary pressures. "The Siddaramaiah government has increased milk prices twice within 13 months of taking office," Ashoka said. "At a time when people are already struggling with high petrol, diesel, and vegetable prices, this hike only exacerbates their financial woes. We urge the government to reconsider this decision in light of the hardships faced by the middle and lower-income groups," he added...////...
