Bengaluru, July 31 (Reporter) In a scathing critique, BJP MP Tejasvi Surya on Wednesday called out former Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi for his handling of the region’s persistent landslide issues. Rising the issue in the Lok Sabha, Surya alleged that Rahul Gandhi, who served as the Member of Parliament for Wayanad until 2024, failed to address the critical issue of landslides and floods during his tenure. "In the last 1,800 days since Rahul Gandhi was the MP from Wayanad, he has not raised the issue of landslides and floods even once in the Assembly and in Parliament," Surya claimed. Surya's remarks were accompanied by a reference to a 2020 advisory from the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority, which recommended relocating 4,000 families from landslide-prone areas in Wayanad. Surya flayed the lack of action on this recommendation, asserting that no concrete steps have been taken and accusing Rahul Gandhi of neglecting the issue. Adding to the controversy, Kerala's Forest Minister K Raju, in a 2021 Assembly session, revealed that the state government had been unable to address illegal encroachments on forest land due to pressure from political and religious organisations. Surya attributed the failure to remove these encroachments to the vote-bank politics of both the Left Democratic Front (LDF) and United Democratic Front (UDF). "The root cause of the deaths occurring in Kerala’s landslides is this political inaction," he said. Surya emphasised the severity of the situation, noting that over the past five years, Kerala has experienced more than 60% of the country's landslides. "Every year, there are landslides in Kerala. While discussions occur, there are no long-term solutions," he argued.
