Karnataka: Nasscom calls for workweek flexibility amid proposed changes

Bengaluru, July 21 (Reporter) In response to Karnataka's proposed increase in workweek hours, Nasscom clarified on Sunday that it is not advocating longer work hours but for more flexibility within the existing 48-hour workweek framework. This flexibility would help companies with operations across India standardise their work practices. Ashish Aggarwal, Vice President of Nasscom, emphasised, “We fully support the 48-hour workweek, which is the national standard. Our goal is to seek flexibility within this 48-hour framework to assist companies in standardizing their operations nationwide.” Aggarwal also pointed out that while Nasscom has discussed this issue with Karnataka’s IT department, it has yet to engage with the state’s labor department on the matter. “We have not seen the Bill proposed in Karnataka, so we cannot comment on it at this time,” he added. On the other hand, Suhas Adiga, General Secretary of KITU, said the proposed amendment could lead IT/ITES companies to extend working hours indefinitely and switch from a three-shift to a two-shift system, which might result in significant job losses and negatively impact employee health.
