Karnataka to implement internal SC reservations

Bengaluru, Oct 28 (Reporter) In a significant move, the Karnataka government on Monday announced plans to implement internal reservation for Scheduled Castes (SCs), based on a model similar to that used in Telangana. Following a cabinet meeting here, Minister of Social Welfare, Dr HC Mahadevappa, revealed that a commission, headed by a retired High Court judge, will be established to gather empirical data, a prerequisite for effective implementation. The data will be primarily sourced from the national census. Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister HK Patil explained that the commission has been tasked with completing its report within three months. Until the report is submitted, all ongoing recruitment processes will be paused, and any new recruitments will also be postponed to accommodate the policy changes. Mahadevappa, responding to queries about the availability of relevant data, acknowledged that internal reservation has strong backing from various SC associations, including SC Right, Left, Bhovi, and Lambani groups. He assured that any ambiguities regarding the commission's role would be resolved once the terms of reference are formalised. Minister of Food and Civil Supplies, KH Muniyappa, expressed optimism, stating that the cabinet's decision is a step toward justice for SCs.
