Palakkad, Nov 2 (Reporter) Four Railway contractual sanitary workers, including two women, all hailing from Salem in Tamil Nadu, were killed after being hit by the Kerala Express (12626) bound to Thiruvanananthapuram from New Delhi, at Shoranur, on Saturday.
Three bodies were retrieved from nearby railway tracks over the Bharathapuzha river and search operation was on to recover one person who fell down into the river.
The deceased were identified as Lakshmanan, Valli, Rani and Lakshmanan, all hailing from Vizhipuram near Salem in Tamil Nadu.
According to police, the accident occurred at around 1500 hours in afternoon, when the sanitary workers were engaged in removal of the garbage from the railway tracks on the Shoranur railway bridge, around two Km, near the Shoranur Junction.
As these workers could not reach the resting shelter space set up by the railway for them over the Bharathapuzha river (between Shoranur to Cheruthuruthy area), the speeding train approaching towards them hit them and one of them fell into the Bharathapuzha river.
The bodies of Lakshmanan, Valli and Rani were recovered from nearby the railway track.
While the search operation to fish out the body of Lakshmanan from the Bharathapuzha river was on by the fire brigade personnel in midst of rains.
The Shoranur police carried out inquest of the bodies and shifted them to Palakkad district hospital for post-mortem.
