Kerala: Toll rises to two in Kasargod temple firecracker explosion

Kasaragod, Nov 3 (Reporter) The toll rose to two on Sunday in the recent firecracker explosion incident at TheruAnjutumbalam Veerarkavu temple in Kerala's Kasaragod district. The explosion in the Nileshwaram area occurred on October 30. Ratheesh (32), who was seriously injured in the explosion, died on Sunday. A resident of Kinavoor, Ratheesh was employed as a barber. Undergoing treatment with 60 percent burns in a private hospital at Kozhikode, he perished on Sunday morning. On Saturday night, C Sandeep (38), an autorickshaw driver of Choyyamkode, died due to burn injuries at a private hospital in Kannur. At present 94 persons are hospitalised, Of them, 30 are at the Intensive care Unit (ICU)..The Kerala government is bearing all the medical expenses of the 154 injured in the incident that occurred during a firecracker display. The sparks flew about two metres into a nearby firecracker storage place near the temple, triggering a huge explosion around midnight on October 30. Police have arrested four persons including the temple committee president Chandrasekharan, Secretary Bharathan, fire worker P Rajesh and his accomplice Vijayan on October 30 and released them on bail granted by Hosdurg JFCM. But Kasaragod District Sessions Court on Sunday cancelled the bail of three of the accused including the temple committee members, citing severe violations of the Explosives Act.
