New Delhi, Feb 1 (Reporter) Virat Kohli's eagerly awaited return to the Ranji Trophy ended in disappointment as Delhi secured a commanding innings and 19-run victory over Railways, but still fell short of qualifying for the quarterfinals.
Off-spinner Shivam Sharma’s brilliant five-wicket haul of 33 runs sealed Railways' fate as they were bowled out for just 114 in their second innings on the third day of the Group D encounter at Arun Jaitley Stadium.
Sharma’s third career five-wicket haul in First Class cricket ensured that Kohli, making his first Ranji appearance in over 12 years, was unable to improve on his first-innings score of six. Railways crumbled midway through the afternoon session on Saturday, giving Delhi a comfortable 133-run first-innings lead after they had posted 374.
Despite the dominant victory, Delhi’s hopes of advancing to the quarterfinals were dashed as Saurashtra, with a bonus-point win, tied with Tamil Nadu on 25 points. Delhi, who finished with 21 points, were eliminated from contention in the final round of the group phase.
The match, which had drawn widespread attention due to Kohli's return, saw one last show of adulation from the fans before the lunch break. Three spectators breached security from the stand named after Gautam Gambhir and sprinted onto the outfield to meet Kohli during Sumit Mathur’s over. Security swiftly intervened, chasing the trespassers into the field and escorting them away.
Sharma, reflecting on the security breach, said, "The craze around Virat bhaiya is such, but it’s not right for them to enter. We were just joking about it within the team. They didn’t say anything to Virat. They just told Virat to tell the security not to hit them."
Delhi’s dominant display in the match proved bittersweet as they were left to reflect on a missed opportunity in the final group round...////...
