Kolkata, Aug 29 (Reporter) Slogans like "We want justice" rent the air in Kolkata on Thursday as three separate rallies – one by the Congress and others by organisations working for women and the elderly – were organised to protest the 31-year-old woman doctor’s murder at R G Kar Hospital. The day-long demonstrations brought traffic in the city's central and northern parts to a standstill. The rallies were organised on a day when the West Bengal government announced the convening of a two-day special session of the Assembly starting September 2 to table and pass a legislation recommending capital punishment for convicted rapists. Leading the Congress march on Thursday, former MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury alleged that the Mamata Banerjee government had made every possible attempt to tamper with evidence and shield the culprits, close to the Chief Minister, in the doctor's murder. The protests over the crime, which were initially restricted to the medical fraternity in first five days after the crime on August 9, seem to have now turned into a public movement, particularly attracting women. Hundreds of women under the banner of “Jago Nari” took out a protest rally on Thursday near Shyam Bazar five-point, just 500 metres from Hospital where the doctor was brutally murdered on August 9. "Our protests will continue till justice is done over the murder. Identify the culprits and give exemplary punishment to the guilty and give safety and security to women in society,” said a marcher. A similar protest rally was organised by elderly people in the central part of the city. On Friday, the students’ wing of the ruling Trinamool Congress has planned protests at the gates of all universities to demand capital punishment for rapists. The BJP’s women’s wing also plans to lay siege to the State Women Commission’s office on Friday. Meanwhile, the CBI's anti-corruption teams visited RG Kar Hospital's mortuary, store department and the scene of crime in the 3rd floor of the chest department seminar hall in connection with the alleged financial irregularities that took place in the institution during the tenure of the deposed hospital chief Sandip Ghosh. Ghosh has been undergoing daily interrogation for the past 14 days at the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) office. All these days, he has been appearing at the probe agency’s office at 10 am and returning home at 10 pm. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has also suspended the membership of Sandip Ghosh. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, meanwhile, hit out at a "malicious disinformation campaign" against her and said in a social media post that she never threatened the protesting students. Her remarks came a day after her address to members of the ruling Trinamool Congress’ student wing on the latter's foundation day on Wednesday, accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP of conspiring against her government. Banerjee said in a message on X, “Let me most emphatically clarify that I have not uttered a single word against the (medical etc.) students or their movements. I totally support their movement. Their movement is genuine. I never threatened them, as some people are accusing me of doing. This allegation is completely false." The BJP organised a 12-hour Bengal bandh on Wednesday during which sporadic violence was reported and a BJP leader’s vehicle was shot at and attacked with crude bombs in North 24 Parganas. The BJP claimed 1,350 of its supporters were arrested and 210 wounded during the bandh. The BJP has also begun a 7-day sit-in-demonstration at Dorina Crossing at Esplanade against the arrests. Party leaders have also launched demonstrations at all the magistrate offices across the state for next 7 days. The cease-work of the junior doctors in West Bengal government's owned hospitals entered the 21st day even after Banerjee appealed to them on Wednesday to resume duty. The medics are demanding justice for their 31-year-old lady doctor allegedly raped and murdered on August 9. Sanjay Roy, civic volunteer attached to Kolkata Police, is the lone accused arrested so far...////...
