Kolkata police chief should resign, face CBI grilling: Medics

Kolkata, Aug 25 (Reporter) The striking Kolkata medics on Sunday demanded the resignation of city Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal and his questioning by the Central Bureau of Investigation as part of the federal agency's ongoing probe into the murder and rape of a doctor in R G Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. The demand for action against the police chief was voiced on the 17th day of a cease-work of junior medics who have refused to attend Outdoor Patient Department (OPD) over their demands of justice for their murdered colleague and security at work place. The agitating medics announced that their cease-work at the OPDs in government-run institutions across West Bengal would continue till the time there is visible progress in the investigation. The medics have also called a mass convention on Monday at Calcutta Medical College and Hospital in Central Kolkata. The protesting doctors also demanded immediate suspension of ousted RGKH principal Sandip Ghosh, who has been facing daily questioning by the CBI for alleged lapses in the murder case alleged financial irregularities in the troubled hospital since 2021. On Sunday, the CBI’s anti-corruption unit carried out searches at 15 places in Kolkata and Howrah and North 24 Parganas districts over the alleged financial irregularities in the hospital. The CBI raided the house and offices of Ghosh, former superintendent Sanjay Vashist's house and office, premises of hospital’s former forensic chief Debashish Shome and businessman and supplier Biplab Singha in the alleged monetary scam. BJP's state general secretary Jagannath Chatterjee on Saturday alleged a bio-medical waste disposal scandal in government hospitals. He claimed a company which was given a contract to handle medical waste of 52,000 beds did not have a waste disposal unit in West Bengal. He also demanded an Enforcement Department (ED) probe into money laundering aspect of the financial irregularities in government hospitals...////...
