Kolkata trial court expected to pronounce judgment on Abhaya rape and murder case on Saturday

Kolkata, Jan 18 (Reporter) A city court on Saturday is expected to pronounce the verdict of an alleged rape and murder case of a young woman medical student, who was found dead at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in north Kolkata on August 9, 2024, official sources said. The Sealdah sessions court held the trial in-camera from November 12, 2024, and concluded on January 9, 2025, with statements recorded from 50 witnesses, including the victim’s parents, investigating officials, forensic experts, and her colleagues at the RG Kar. The court said that the judgement would be pronounced on January 18, 2025. Civic Volunteer attached to the Kolkata Police Sanjay Roy is the only accused in the brutal rape and murder, which had rocked the country and beyond. He was arrested on the day by Kolkata Police, who handed over to the CBI after Calcutta High transferred the case to the federal agency on August 14, 2024. The 31-year-old 2nd year post graduate woman medic was found brutally murdered after being raped at the cardiac department seminar room on the 3rd floor, where she went to rest after doing 36 hours duty at a stretch. The judgement is expected to be delivered by Additional District and Sessions Judge Anirban Das later today, sources said.
