Hyderabad, Feb 16 (Reporter) BRS working president K T Rama Rao (KTR) expressed his strong displeasure over the BJP government's alleged misinformation campaign, stating that it has no moral right to criticise BRS’s governance in Telangana.
In an open letter, KTR reminded that Telangana was a surplus budget state even before it was forcibly merged with Andhra Pradesh.
He clarified that when Telangana was formed in 2014, it inherited a debt of Rs 70,000 crore. Despite this, after a decade of BRS rule, the state was handed over to the Congress government with a surplus budget.
He criticised attempts to link state debts with financial mismanagement, asserting that the BRS government prudently invested every borrowed rupee into transformative projects that reshaped Telangana.
KTR highlighted that the BRS administration overcame historical neglect and spearheaded massive development initiatives, making Telangana a model state.
He dismissed the notion that having debt makes a state backwards, emphasising that what truly matters is how the borrowed funds are utilized. Unlike the NDA government at the Centre, which he accused of failing to account for its Rs 125 lakh crore debt, Telangana’s borrowings were used to build ambitious infrastructure projects that permanently resolved drinking water and irrigation issues. These investments, he asserted, have brought lasting benefits to agriculture, industry, and overall state development.
Strongly condemning BJP’s portrayal of Telangana’s financial situation, KTR accused the Centre of favouring corporate entities while neglecting states. He pointed out that Telangana's rise to second place in crop yields after Punjab was due to wealth creation programs funded through responsible borrowing.
He also criticised the BJP government for step-motherly treatment towards Telangana in the central budget and railway allocations. Recalling past injustices, he said the people of Telangana have not forgotten how the Centre unfairly took away seven Mandal's and the Lower Sileru Power Project after coming to power.
KTR lashed out at Union Minister Piyush Goyal for allegedly insulting Telangana’s self-respect when the state sought its rightful share from the Centre.
He accused the BJP of failing to deliver on key promises, including the Turmeric Board, which was allocated no funds in the central budget, and the ITIR project, which was scrapped by the BJP soon after assuming office in 2014. He labelled the Centre’s continued neglect of parliamentary commitments as an outright betrayal.
He also slammed the central government for taking undue credit for Telangana’s achievements, particularly in providing drinking water to 100 per cent of households under Mission Bhagiratha, which was executed entirely by the state government.
He called it ironic that the Centre was now counting 38 lakh tap connections under the Jal Jeevan Mission, despite its negligible contribution. Additionally, he criticised the BJP for ignoring repeated requests to revive the closed Cement Corporation of India in Adilabad, which could have generated employment for local youth.
KTR warned that the people of Telangana are watching and will remember the BJP’s failures. He accused the eight BJP MPs from Telangana of failing to secure even minimal financial support for the state.
Rejecting BJP’s attempts to deflect attention from its own shortcomings by attacking BRS, he stated that every rupee borrowed by BRS was invested in Telangana’s growth.
He concluded with a scathing remark, accusing BJP of being “both the kettle and the pot, so black that it is practically a black hole.”
