Lightning and storm kill at least 12 people in Malda

Kolkata, May 16 (Reporter) At least twelve people were killed after being struck by lightning and storms, accompanied by high-speed winds in West Bengal's Malda district on Thursday afternoon, official sources said. The nor'wester also threw life out of gear in the northern region of the state in which many people received injuries, sources added. Sources said the damage in the calamity was yet to be assessed as the toll in the lightning may go up. The injured were taken to the Malda Medical College and Hospital, where the deceased were shifted for autopsy, sources added. The deceased were identified as Chandan Sahani (41), Raj Mridha (17) and Manojit Mandal in old Malda. Teenager Asit Saha died after being hit by lightning at Gojol. Almost all the dead were identified. The local administration was helping the affected people with necessary needs as far as possible and announced an relief of Rs 2 lakh for rehabilitation. Many houses were also damaged in the district. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said, " My heart goes out to the families who lost their loved ones in Malda due to the tragic lightning strikes. I extend my deepest condolences to them during this difficult time. " "My thoughts and prayers are with the injured, and I pray for their swift recovery, " she added.
