Maha: Court rejects ex-CBC chief plea in bribery case

Mumbai, Feb 5 (Reporter) A special court here rejected an application filed by former Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) chief executive officer (CEO) Rakesh Kumar seeking to be discharged from a corruption case filed against him in 2014, as per the order made available on Wednesday. In July 2014, CBI had arrested Kumar and an authorised censor agent and an advisory panel member of the CBFC for their alleged involvement in demanding a Rs 70,000 bribe to urgently clear a film from Chhattisgarh. In his plea Kumar said that he was falsely implicated in the case and there is no evidance against him. While opposing the plea, CBI contended that the agency has gathered evidence against the official who used to allegedly take illegal gratification in lieu of issuing censor board certificates to various films. While rejecting the plea, special CBI Judge S M Menjoge said in his order that 'Demand of money by Rakesh Kumar is prima facie appearing. He was collecting the amount through his agents. Demand and acceptance of the amount can be proved by circumstantial evidence also, as many times direct evidence is not available. It can be proved only after recording of evidence. Hence, there is sufficient material to frame charges. Therefore, he cannot be discharged as prayed...////...
