Mumbai, Dec 24 (Reporter) Veteran filmmaker Shyam Sunder S Benegal, a multiple National Award winner and among the pioneers of ‘parallel cinema’ -- with silver screen classics like “Junoon”, “Ankur”, “Manthan”, “Zubeida” and “The Making of the Mahatma” -- was cremated with full state honours and a three-gun salute at Shivaji Park's electric crematorium, Dadar in central Mumbai on Tuesday. Benegal passed away on Monday at a hospital in Mumbai Central due to a chronic kidney disease. Notable figures from the film industry, such as actors Naseeruddin Shah, Rajit Kapoor, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, and Ila Arun, who starred in many of his films, Ratna Pathak-Shah, her son Vivaan Shah, writer-poet Gulzar, director Hansal Mehta, lyricist-writer Javed Akhtar, actors Divya Dutta, Boman Irani, Kunal Kapoor and Anang Desai paid their last respects. The ceremony is being attended by family and close friends, reflecting on the legendary filmmaker's impactful career in Indian parallel cinema.
