Maha: HC refuses to grant police protection for inter-faith couple

Mumbai, Dec 12 (Reporter) The Bombay High Court has refused to grant police protection to an interfaith couple observing that the State cannot be expected to provide police protection to a couple solely because they wish to live together in a live-in relationship, their lawyer said here on Thursday. The court was hearing a habeas corpus petition filed by a 20-year-old Muslim boy seeking direction to police to produce 19-year-old Hindu girl, who had been sent to a shelter home in Mumbai by police over an issue of living with a Muslim person. In the previous hearing, the court had directed police to produce the girl before the court, following which the girl was produced before a division bench led by Justice Bharati Dangre. Upon the production of the girl in the court, the bench asked several questions to her. Replying to it, the girl said that she did not want to live with her parents and stay with her partner. She also said that even though her partner was legally not in a position to marry her as he was only 20 years old, she would stay with him. However, the court asked the teen to wait for the petitioner to settle down before making a decision. The court also allowed father of the girl to speak to her over this, and adjourned the hearing till December 13 (tomorrow)...////...
