Mumbai, Jan 27 (Reporter) The Bombay high court on Monday reserved its order, after hearing till seven months, on the appeals filed by convicts in the deadly Mumbai train bombings case and the Maharashtra government's request to confirm their death sentences.
A specially constituted bench of Justices Anil Kilor and Shyam Chandak reserved its order after the prosecution today evening concluded the arguments.
The bench said that if the court requires some clarification from both sides, the hearing will begin once again through video conference for a few hours.
A battery of senior lawyers, including S Muralidhar, former Chief Justice of the Orissa high court, former Justice of Kerala high court and now senior Advocate S Nagamuthu, Adv Yug Choudhary argued for the convicts at length and urged the court to acquit the convicts as they are languishing in jail for the past 18 years despite being innocent.
Senior Advocate Raja Thakare, who was appointed as a special public prosecutor for the case in September 2023, urged the court to confirm the death penalty awarded by special court to the convicts as this is a rarest of the rare case.
The case in question pertains to the series of seven bomb blasts that occurred on Mumbai’s local trains on July 11, 2006, which resulted in over 180 deaths and numerous injuries.
