Mumbai, Sep 1 (Reporter) To protest against insult to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj after collapse of his statue at fort in Malvan, the leaders and activists of Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) held a march on Sunday here from Hutatma Chowk to the Gateway of India.
In the march, NCP-SP president Sharad Pawar, Shiv Sena-UBT chief and former chief minister Uddhav Thackeray, Congress state president Nana Patole, MP Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj, Mumbai Congress president Varsha Gaikwad, CWC member Chandrakant Handore, CWC member and state working president Naseem Khan, MP Sanjay Raut, MP Supriya Sule, Congress chief spokesperson Atul Londhe, Anil Deshmukh, Aaditya Thackeray, along with thousands of workers participated.
During which, the participants carried out a 'Jode Maro' (hit with footwear) agitation against the BJP-led state government.
At Gateway of India, they paid homage to the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the revered king.
Speaking on this occasion, Patole alleged that the BJP government has committed the sin of insulting Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj by indulging in corruption and taking commissions even for a project in his name.
The BJP's Peshwa-like attitude is to seek votes in the name of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and then insult him once they come to power, he added.
Sharad Pawar stated that the Chief Minister claimed that Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's statue on
the Rajkot fort in Malvan fell due to strong winds, however, the statue in front of the Gateway of India has been standing for many years, as have numerous statues in other parts of the state.
The incident of the statue falling on the Rajkot fort is a clear example of corruption, he charged.
The fall of Maharaj's statue has insulted Shivaji's followers across the country, he noted and added today's protest was held to condemn those responsible for this incident.
Uddhav Thackeray remarked that the fall of Chhatrapati's statue has enraged Shivaji's devotees nationwide.
He said that although the Prime Minister has apologised, there was arrogance on his face even while offering the apology.
"Was the apology for collapse of the statue, for the corruption involved, or to cover up the corruption?" the Sena-UBT chief countered.
The public will not forgive those who insulted Maharaj, Thackeray added and called on people not to rest until these traitors to Shivaji are expelled from India.
Kolhapur MP Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj said that the collapse of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's statue has angered the public.
"This is an insult to both Maharaj and Maharashtra, and those responsible must not be forgiven. Action must be taken against those found guilty, and steps must be taken to ensure the honour of Shivaji Maharaj is upheld," he added...////...
