Maha: Panchaganga river water rises close to alert level

Kolhapur, Jul 20 (Reporter) With heavy incessant rain lashing all parts of the district, the water level of the main Panchaganga river rose to 36.2 feet at Rajaram Bandhara in Kasba Bavda area, three feet short of alert level at 39 feet, on Saturday. Due to heavy rainfall, the Panchaganga river is overflowing and with it total 79 'bandharas' (weirs) including Rajaram, Survey, Rui, Ichalkaranji, Terwad, Shirol, Shignapur, were also overflowing. Consequently, villages have lost direct contact with tehsil places. Similarly, the water level of other rivers including Bhogavati, Kumbhi, Kasari, Tulshi is also increasing rapidly. With the Dudhanga river having started overflowing, the Radhanagari-Nipani highway is totally submerged and closed for vehicular traffic. In all, 25 roads, including five state highways and 11 main roads in the district are closed for all types of vehicles. Meanwhile, the collector today reviewed the flood situation in the district and directed the disaster management to keep NDRF teams and teams of volunteers ready to face any likely flood situation in the district...////...
