Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Jan 18 (Reporter) While the recognition of Marathi as a classical language is a moment of pride, it brings with it profound responsibility. The sentiment was echoed by the panellists during a discussion - "Marathi Language’s Classical Status and Marathi Cinema"—at" the 10th Ajanta Ellora International Film Festival on Friday night. Renowned actor and producer Subodh Bhave, screenwriter Kshitij Patwardhan, and Maharashtra Film, Stage, and Cultural Development Corporation officer Pankaj Chavan participated in the discussion. They also interacted with the audience during the session. The speakers emphasised the importance of respecting and valuing our language. The belief that life can function smoothly without Marathi undermines the very essence of its classical status. Cinema is a visual narrative, but language is its medium. We can express our thoughts and feelings in our mother tongue most effectively. Without embracing this fact, Marathi cannot emerge as a powerful cinematic language," they argued. Several eminent personalities, like the acclaimed filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker, Artistic Director of AIFF Chandrakant Kulkarni, and famous Marathi poet Prof. D.S. Vaidya, attended the discussion. The session was moderated by the festival director, Sunil Sukthankar. Sharing his thoughts, Marathi screenwriter and lyricist Kshitij Patwardhan highlighted the potential for Marathi to produce global-standard literature. He stressed the need to expand the scope of Marathi cinema by adapting quality literary works into films. Famous Marathi actor and producer Subodh Bhave stated that the notion of not needing Marathi is detrimental to its classical stature. Language should be embraced willingly, not enforced. Cinema should be seen as a source of joy and entertainment, not just a medium for social reform, he added. Pankaj Chavan from the Maharashtra Film, Stage, and Cultural Development Corporation noted the government’s efforts to promote Marathi cinema.
