Mumbai, Sep 25 (Reporter) Lok Sabha MP and All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief, Asaduddin Owaisi, claimed on Wednesday that contrary to the central government's claims, the proposed Waqf Board (Amendment) bill has been brought with an intention to deprive Muslims of their waqf properties.
Hitting out at the ruling BJP, he charged that the central government has brought the bill to finish the Waqf Board and not to bring transparency in Waqf administration and property as it claims.
He claimed that the BJP and its parent organisation Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) are spreading "false propaganda" against Waqf Board.
"False propaganda is being spread by BJP-RSS that Waqf is a government property instead of private property. The other false propaganda is being spread that the Waqf Board has 9.4 lakh acres of land. Just like properties are donated in Hindu religion, in the Muslim religion, these are donated properties. Why is the government interfering? This is violation of Article 26," Owaisi told reporters here.
Highlighting a clause in the Waqf Amendment bill, he said, "It is written in it that a practising Muslim from past five years can perform Waqf. What is the meaning of a practising Muslim? Will he be someone who reads Namaz five times a day, will have a beard or a skullcap... cap...will his wife be Muslim or non-Muslim? Who are they to decide? No such law is there in Hindu religion."
“I want to ask the government, why did they come up with such terminology as 'practising Muslim'? Who are they to identify whether I am practising or not? Will Narendra Modi now peep into our houses? Or will they say after five years, now you are a Muslim and need to get a certificate?” the AIMIM leader added...////...
