Kolkata, Mar 11 (Reporter) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday categorically said that she would oppose the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in the state if it discriminates against any community or people.
"I will give you details of our stand on the CAA once the notification is issued and we go through it on Tuesday,' Banerjee told a media conference at Nabanna, the state secretariat.
She also questioned the move of the central government just before the parliament elections in the country.
Banerjee, who is also the ruling Trinamool Congress Chairperson, said "The CAA is a gimmick by the BJP to show off and indeed a lollipop just before the poll".
She asked whether those who voted to elect their representatives at various constitutional bodies were not Indian citizens, and wondered why the Union government is now feeling the need for the CAA.
She declared her government would not allow any discrimination against any people under the laws and neither allow establishment of concentration camps in the state.
Banerjee said she would go to Habra in North 24 Parganas district on Tuesday and give details of the party's stand on the CAA.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government on Monday notified the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act — ensuring citizenship for undocumented Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, and Parsis from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh.
The CAA rules aim to confer Indian citizenship to persecuted non-Muslim migrants - including Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Parsis, and Christians - from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, who arrived in India before December 31, 2014.
Meanwhile, sections of the Matua community at Thakurnagar in North 24 Parganas began celebrating blowing drums and traditional musical instruments to welcome the CAA...////...
