Mamata writes to PM seeking stringent central legislation to punish rapists

Kolkata, Aug 22 (Reporter) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to enact a stringent central legislation for prescribing exemplary punishment to rapists and suggested trials in such cases should be completed in 15 days. "Such serious and sensitive issues need to be addressed in a comprehensive manner through stringent central legislation prescribing exemplary punishment against the persons involved in such dastardly crimes," Banerjee said in the letter, a copy of which was released to the media. Drawing the Prime Minister's attention to the "regular and increasing occurrence of rape cases throughout the country", Banerjee said in many cases rapes with murder are committed. "it is horrifying to see that almost 90 cases of rapes occur daily throughout the country. This shakes the confidence and conscience of the society and the nation," Banerjee said. The chief minister emphasised that it is the bounden duty "for all of us to put an end to it so that the women feel safe and secure". Banerjee suggested setting up fast-track special courts for speedy trials in such cases "Setting up of fast-track special courts for speedy trials in such cases should also be considered in the proposed legislation to ensure quick justice. Trial in such cases should preferably be completed within 15 days," she demanded. Banerjee dashed off the letter to the PM at a time when her government has drawn much flak after a 31-year-old lady medic was allegedly raped and murdered at her workplace - RG Kar Medical College and Hospital - in north Kolkata. After the August 9 gruesome incident came to light, it sparked shock and outrage across the country, prompting spontaneous protests all over India. Doctors, particularly the junior medics, ceased work all over the country, demanding exemplary punishment for the culprits and adequate security measures in their workplaces. The state government has come under criticism both in the Supreme Court and the Calcutta High Court for its handling of the chain of incidents including the doctor's rape and murder, as also the vandalism in the R G Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 14-15 midnight...////...
