Imphal, Aug 6 (Reporter) The Manipur Legislative Assembly resolved on Tuesday to form a House Committee to probe the issue of illegal immigrants.
Chief Minister N Biren Singh said the population of indigenous population is low and if the matter is not dealt with properly there will be lots of misunderstanding.
He proposed a House Committee to identify those who entered Manipur after 1961. Manipur has decided to take 1961 as the base year. The number of people who came after the military coup in 1962 and uprising in 1988 need to be thoroughly checked, he said.
Biren presented satellite photographs of a town in 2006 and 2018 to show the increase of new villages. The 398 km long international border between India and Manipur is not properly guarded and porous.
A Cabinet Sub Committee was formed headed by Letpao Haokip to identify illegal immigrants with approval of the Prime Minister, he said.
Biren said the immigrants can’t be identified once they enter the villages as they belong to the same ethnic group. Myanmar citizens were found doing business by establishing new settlements at Churachandpur, he said. Kukis of Manipur and Myanmar speak the same language...////...
