Many female inmates getting pregnant in jails across Bengal : Amicus curiae informs HC

Kolkata, Feb 9 (Reporter) The Calcutta High Court took note after being informed by amicus curiae, appointed by it six years ago, that the female inmates in the West Bengal jails are not safe as many of them were getting pregnant during their imprisonment. The amicus curiae also said the medical facilities in Jails were not adequate for the newborns. Advocate Tapas Kumar Bhanja on Thursday sought the judicial intervention from a double bench seeking prevention of the males from entering the prisons of women, citing that the female inmates are getting pregnant and some 196 babies are staying in different jails across the state. The advocate, who was appointed as the amicus curiae by the Calcutta HC in 2018 to report the condition of the jails across the state, submitted his report yesterday to Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam and Justice Supratim Bhattacharya. Bhanja was appointed amicus curiae after taking suo motu on the reported overcrowding the prisons and the conditions of the jails across the state. Sources said the double bench after getting the written report, expressed concern over the prison reforms and noted the suggestion of the amicus curiae,who proposed to bar the entry of male staff from entering the female prisons. The court also viewed the concerning issue and scheduled the same for hearing before a division bench specialising in the criminal cases. The report suggested prohibition on the entry of male employees of correctional homes into the enclosure of women prisoners along with other suggestions which are taken on record, court sources said on Friday.
