Kolkata, Aug 18 (Reporter) Defying inclement weather, thousands of medics on Sunday took out a massive rally in the city demanding justice for a woman doctor, who was allegedly raped and murdered in the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital here.
The newly formed West Bengal Junior Doctors Front, which also set up a legal cell for judicial support for the medics in the future, organised the protest rally from College Square in central Kolkata to the Shyam Baxar five-point crossing in the northern part of the city.
The rallyists held aloft placards demanding justice for the victim, as they marched step by step , defying rains and stranded water.
However, the Kolkata Police set up an iron cage barricade at Hatibagan to prevent the marchers from going beyond Hatibagan More, around half a kilometre south of the Shyam Bazar Crossing.
Earlier in the day, the Kolkata Police clamped a ban on the assembly of more than five people in and around the government-run R G Kar Medical College and Hospital for a week under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023.
The cops also summoned two senior doctors Kunal Sarkar and Subarna Goswamy to appear before them by Sunday afternoon.
The two senior medics have been accused of spreading rumours and disclosed the identity of the woman medic. However, sources said, the two medics, who are now outside the city, would
respond to the police summons after consulting their respective lawyers.
Meanwhile, the Bidhannagar Police Station has imposed prohibitory orders in and around Salt Lake Stadium on the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass from 4 PM to midnight on Sunday after intelligence reports said there was a possibility of violence, a senior official said.
The Durand Football organising Committee, in consultation with the police, police has already called off the derby match between East Bengal and Mohun Bagan slated to have been played at the stadium during the day fearing protests at the venue.
The official said a serious situation could have emerged had a few groups resorted to fomenting trouble in the stadium before an expected turnout of around 62,000 spectators.
He alleged that "some groups or some people" were conspiring to create chaos, given the present situation in the city. Five people have been detained on the issue.
