Shillong, Nov 27 (Reporter) Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Wednesday ruled out the possibility of realignment in the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) coalition government though the National People's Party (NPP) has secured 32 seats in the 60-member Assembly after winning the byelection from Gambegre Assembly constituency recently. Sangma, who is also the National President of NPP, reiterated that his party is committed to its coalition partners for stability and progress of the state. “We are very happy that the NPP now has 32 MLAs. This is a significant milestone we have not seen since the days of the APHLC (All Party Hills Leaders Conference). We are thankful to God and to the people for the confidence they have shown in us,” Sangma told reporters after attending the oath taking of his wife, Dr Mehtab Chandee Agitok Sangma as the member of the 11th Meghalaya Legislative Assembly from Gambegre Assembly constituency. Stating that right from day one, the party has been very clear that as a party, as a coalition, and as a government, Sangma said, "the aim is to send a positive message. Though politics is dynamic and complex, but stability, trust, and confidence are crucial. Despite having the numbers, we remain committed to our coalition partners. This mutual trust ensures long-term stability and economic growth for Meghalaya. Therefore, there is no question of any realignment.” “Differences will arise, we may not always agree on everything. But our shared commitment is to the overall development of the state. Our coalition partners have our full support and confidence, and we will continue to work together," the Chief Minister said. On whether there was pressure from the NPP to accomodate more ministers, Sangma ruled out such pressure from NPP MLAs. “Our MLAs are confident in the government’s direction. While there may be a desire for more ministerial representation, we must consider the larger political landscape of Meghalaya, balancing the interests of Garo, Khasi, and Jaiñtia Hills. We remain attentive to the concerns raised by our MLAs and are working to resolve them, ensuring their trust in the government,” he said. Expressing gratitude to the people of Gambegre for their support in the recently held byelection, the Chief Minister said, “Gambegre has been one of the toughest constituencies for us, especially in Garo Hills. In the last four elections, we never secured a victory, often finishing third. This win was a hard-fought, and I am thankful to everyone who supported us. We received backing from all quarters.” Sangma is leading a strong NPP-led government of 50 members which comprised NPP (32), United Democratic Party (12), two MLAs each from the BJP and Hill State People’s Democratic Party and two Independents. The opposition consisted of All India Trinamool Congress (5), Voice of the People Party (VPP) four members and Indian National Congress (1)...////...
