Shillong, June 6 (Reporter) The Voice of People’s Party (VPP) on Thursday said that it will lend “issue-based” support to the Congress-led Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) at the Centre. “We will not support the BJP-led NDA at the Centre. We have made our stand very clear that we will not work with the BJP due to ideological differences,” VPP President, Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit told UNI over the phone. “If the NDA forms the government, we will sit in the Opposition. But, we are ready to extend issue based support to the INDIA bloc if it seeks,” he added. Basaiawmoit said that the VPP has been formed based on certain ideologies and principles and that it won't be compromised. “We would extend support to the INDIA bloc when it comes to the issue of the rights of the citizens and minorities of this country,” he said. BJP-backed National People’s Party (NPP) candidate Dr. Mazel Ampareen Lyngdoh, who is also the lone woman cabinet minister in the Conrad Sangma-led government, secured 1,86,488 votes while Robertjune Kharjahrin of the United Democratic Party got 44,563 votes. Basaiawmoit attributed the landslide victory of Syngkon as a clear verdict that the people of the state have lost their faith in the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government due to the alleged corruption, nepotism and the burning issue of unemployment. “We are going to take up the issue of corruption at the national level. We would follow up on the implementation of the ILP in Meghalaya, Article 371, and other issues mentioned in our election manifesto,” the VPP supremo said.
