Aizawl, Oct 3((Reporter) Mizoram police have seized drugs, narcotics, and psychotropic substances valued at over Rs 188.64 crore from January to October this year, according to Lalbiakthanga Khiangte, Inspector General of Police (IGP) for law and order and Chief Public Relations Officer of the state police.
Khiangte stated that 305 criminal cases have been filed, and 412 individuals have been arrested in connection with drug trafficking and peddling over the past 10 months.
During this period, police seized 67.82 kilograms of heroin, worth over Rs 20.34 crore, and arrested 341 people. They also confiscated 480.884 kilograms of methamphetamine tablets, valued at more than Rs 62.51 crore, with 44 suspects allegedly involved in meth trafficking from neighbouring Myanmar.
Additionally, police seized 35.155 kilograms of crystal meth, worth over Rs 105.46 crore. Other drugs seized included 1,075 kilograms of caffeine (anhydrous) worth around Rs 15.6 lakh, 294.925 kilograms of cannabis, as well as alprazolam and cough syrups containing codeine.
Meanwhile, the state excise and narcotics department seized 39.18 kilograms of heroin and 122.435 kilograms of methamphetamine in the past 10 months, department spokesperson Peter Zohmingthanga said on Saturday. Their seizures also included 561.725 kilograms of cannabis and drugs like cough syrup, alprazolam, nitrazepam, diazepam, and tramadol.
Zohmingthanga noted that cannabis abuse has grown increasingly popular among youth in Mizoram. At least 61 individuals, including eight women, have died from drug abuse since January, according to Excise and narcotics department records.
