Aizawl, Nov 17 (Reporter) In a significant development, Mizoram on Sunday registered no pig deaths due to the ongoing African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreak for the first time this year, state animal husbandry and veterinary officials said.
Officials noted that while no pigs were culled on November 10 and last Friday, Sunday marked the first time no daily pig casualties were reported since the ASF resurgence began in February. The outbreak was first confirmed on February 9 at Leithum village in Champhai district near the Myanmar border.
Since then, the highly contagious porcine disease has claimed the lives of 14,699 pigs, with 255 villages declared infected as of Sunday. However, culling operations continued in some areas, with two pigs culled at Baktawng village in Serchhip district on Sunday to curb the virus's spread.
The cumulative number of pigs culled in Mizoram during 2024 to prevent the disease from spreading further has reached 23,941.
