Mumbai, Jan 23 (Reporter) Bollywood filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma was sentenced to three months simple imprisonment by a local court in a cheque bounce case.
The case was filed against Varma seven years ago under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, a lawyer said here on Thursday.
Due to his non-appearance in the court, the Andheri Magistrate court on Tuesday has also issued a non-bailable warrant against him.
The court has also directed him to pay compensation of Rs. 3.72 lakh to the complainant in the case within three months. If the fine is not paid, the court said Varma will have to spend another three months in jail.
The cheque bounce case was filed in 2018 by a company named Shree through Maheshchandra Mishra against RGV’s firm.
In June 2022, Varma was granted bail after furnishing a personal bond and cash security of Rs 5,000.
Ram Gopal Varma has been facing financial doldrums in recent years as his films have not performed well.
He had also sold his office during the COVID-19 pandemic.
While sentencing Ram Gopal Varma, Magistrate YP Pujari said, "No question of set-off under Section 428 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973 as the accused has not spent any period in custody during the trial."
