Mumbai May 18 (Reporter) Two prominent bodies of the Muslim community on Saturday sought an apology from Shiv Sena (UBT) head and former Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray for his statement that he is proud of Babri Masjid demolition and sought an assurance that he would never ally with BJP.
They also said that no apology means no vote - and the demand comes in the run-up to the fifth and final phase of polls in Maharashtra.
The Muslim Voters Council of India (MVCI) and All India Ulema Mashaikh Federation (AIUMF) in a press conference on Saturday made the demand.
“The statements made by Modi are communal and we do not accept them. We are also angered that the INDIA opposition alliance did not give a single Lok Sabha ticket to Muslims,” MVCI President Abdul Bari Khan said.
AIUMF spokesperson Asif Aziz Sardar said that the Muslim community opposes communal parties. “But we have serious concerns and wish that the Maha Vikas Aghadi in Maharashtra give their commitment to the Muslim community in Maharashtra in writing,” he said.
They demanded that Thackeray’s Shiv Sena (UBT) must give it in writing that they will not support BJP directly or indirectly, inside or outside the Parliament or Maharashtra Legislature.
"Thackeray in the past has said publicly that he is proud of the Babri Masjid demolition. He must immediately apologise for his statement and withdraw it unconditionally,” they said, adding that candidates who had communal antecedents need to apologise for their actions and words.
“Let us start a new chapter with those candidates/ parties that tender an unconditional apology for rhetoric and violence against Muslims….otherwise no apology no vote,” they said.
Khan said: “Muslims have been treated like vote banks in India. We have played a major role in preserving India’s secularism. We must work in the interest of the nation and make sure that communal parties are not voted to power...////...
