New Arunachal CM to take oath Thursday

Itanagar, June 12 (Reporter) All preparations are underway for the swearing-in ceremony of a new Bharatiya Janata Party chief minister in Arunachal Pradesh on Thursday. The ceremony will be held at the Darbar Hall of Raj Bhavan in Itanagar. The new Chief Minister and his Council of Ministers will take oath at 11 am in the presence of BJP national president JP Nadda, senior leader and Union Home Minister Amit Shah and party’s national general secretary (organisation) BL Santosh, a BJP leader said on Wednesday. Nadda, Shah, and Santosh were expected to arrive in Itanagar Wednesday evening. The meeting of the BJP Legislature Party (BLP) would be held Wednesday afternoon to formally elect the new leader in the presence of the party’s two central observers -- Ravi Shankar Prasad and Tarun Chugh. The new BLP leader would then stake claim before Governor Lt General (Retd) KT Parnaik to form the next government in the state, he said. The sitting Chief Minister Pema Khandu was expected to retain his position. The BJP has returned to power in Arunachal Pradesh for the third consecutive time by securing a resounding victory in the recent Assembly polls, bagging 46 seats in the 60-member House. Opposition Congress, which won four seats in 2019 elections, managed to get just one seat from the 19 seats it contested in 2024. The National People’s Party (NPP), a constituent of the BJP-led NEDA, bagged five seats, and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the People’s Party of Arunachal (PPA) bagged three and two seats, respectively.
